Bethesda's Todd Howard Discusses New RPG Timelines Amid Fallout TV Show Success

Todd Howard asserts that Bethesda isn't in a hurry to release a new RPG due to the tremendous success of the Fallout TV show.

The head of Bethesda, Todd Howard, mentioned that the studio doesn't feel compelled to speed up the development of another RPG following the impressive success of the Fallout TV show on Prime Video.

In a recent interview with MrMattyPlays, Howard discussed whether the studio feels the need to expedite the launch of a new RPG, considering the TV show's massive popularity. Referring to their ongoing work on Fallout 76 and other projects, Howard noted that they don’t feel the pressure to rush.

Currently, the Fallout TV show caters to a specific audience in terms of the franchise and storytelling. While Howard understands the desire for a new mainline single-player game, he emphasized that such developments take time. Missing out on things isn't necessarily negative. Their goal is to ensure whatever they produce within a franchise—be it The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or the new addition, Starfield—becomes a significant moment for fans who cherish these series as much as the studio does.

Howard prefers to hold back on new announcements and desires a scenario where games are revealed and released swiftly. This approach, he believes, aligns with answering the YouTuber's question about whether Bethesda feels any pressure to maintain a regular release schedule. However, Howard acknowledges this may not be the answer everyone is hoping for.

The takeaway from Howard’s comments is clear: The Elder Scrolls 6's timeline hasn't been altered by the success of the Fallout TV show and will arrive when Bethesda finishes its development. The studio’s recent game releases have seen gaps of several years: five years between Starfield and Fallout 76, and three years between Fallout 76 and Fallout 4.

Meanwhile, the Fallout TV show attracted a staggering 65 million viewers within its first few weeks, drastically boosting Fallout series sales globally. Howard highlighted that this achievement is beyond anything he's witnessed in his 30-year career. Prime Video has confirmed the renewal of the series for a subsequent season, yet an announcement regarding the launch schedule remains forthcoming, similar to the typical timeline for Bethesda's video game debuts.
