Hideo Kojima is once again sharing his cinematic insights, and this time he highlights a Netflix film that boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating. The movie in question is Hit Man, featuring Glen Powell in the lead role.
Kojima expressed his enthusiasm for Richard Linklater's fresh offering, Hitman, which he watched while traveling. He had long anticipated its release but noted that it was never available in Japanese theaters. The narrative follows a university educator who masquerades as a 'hitman' while assisting law enforcement in their sting operations during his spare time, as he shared through his social media.
The Netflix original showcases Powell as Gary Johnson, an instructor of psychology and philosophy at the University of New Orleans who is involved with the local police in various undercover missions. Unexpectedly, Gary finds himself acting as a staged hitman to rescue a woman played by Adria Arjona. Directed by Richard Linklater, the screenplay is co-written with Powell and loosely draws from a true crime article published in 2001 by Ski Hollandsworth.
Kojima added that the film strikes a balance between being not overly serious and dark, which he attributes to Linklater’s unique approach. He described it as intelligent, laced with dark humor, and genuinely funny, declaring it a remarkable work. Glen Powell's performance showcases a departure from his typical 'macho' portrayals seen in major films. He wondered aloud if it had finally made its way to Japan today, emphasizing his strong endorsement.
The movie currently holds a 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91% score from audiences. The ensemble cast features Austin Amelio, Sanjay Rao, Molly Bernard, and Evan Holtzman.
